Winslow Homer was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1836. He was raised in Cambridge, where he developed a love of art and the outdoors. Frank Duveneck (1848-1919) was a painter and teacher in Munich, Germany and Cincinnati, Ohio. Born in Covington, Ky., he used the surname Decker until 1886. Alfred Juergens was born in Chicago in 1866. He studied at the Academy of Design in Chicago, the Royal Academy in Munich, and in Paris (1889-1893).
